Combustion takes place in a sealed chamber, with technology to shut down the unit’s operation in such conditions.
This Shield Combustion System is Lochinvar’s patented technology that protects both the hot water heater and your residence from serious damage that could be caused by such incidents.

Happy customers are quite willing to share their Lochinvar experiences:
“I have owned the Lochinvar ETN040 gas water heater for over 8 years. The Lochinvar water heater replaced my old water heater in May 2003 when I had a new furnace installed, and as the contractor handled both heating and plumbing they offered me a deal on the combination package that included the water heater. I have been very pleased with the Lochinvar ETN040. It has a 40 gallon tank capacity which has been sufficient for this house that includes 1 ½ bathrooms, a washing machine, and a dishwasher. Operation is very quiet. The thermostat is adjustable and includes a vacation setting that I always use when going out of town on an extended trip. This feature seems to offer the right balance between maintaining the tank temperature warm enough where it doesn't take long to get up to normal after returning from vacation yet allowing for noticeable cost savings on my gas bill for those times. The water heater came with a 6 year manufacturer warranty, and it has not required any repairs in its over 8 years of service. The only thing I wish was different was that the thermostat is labeled only in relative terms such as "warm" or "hot" with difficult to see marks between them; a graduated scale with numericaltemperature values would help achieve a more precise setting. I would consider the Lochinvar brand again when it comes time to replace this one and would recommend it to others.”

“I had a Lochinvar 50 electric installed 5 years ago and it seems to heat better than the previous heater that it replaced. I'm installing another one in our vacation home as my neighbor there has a Lochinvar and has had no problems either. The Home Depot brand it replaced in my current home had problem after problem and when the warranty expired I switched. Nothing but Lochinvar for me!”
“We installed a new Lochinvar water heater shortly after moving into our new house. The old one was shot and barley produced any hot water. The new water heater works very well. It heats water quickly, in addition it always seems like we have enough hot water in the tank. Relighting the pilot light is pretty simple and the tank has simple to follow controls for turning up the temperature. I have noticed that our gas bills are slightly lower than when we first moved in. The new water heater is the only change we made related to gas in the house, so I am assuming this model is more efficient than the last. I would recommend this model to a friend as so far it has been reliable and we have had no issues. The tank seems to be well construct and very solid. Overall it is a solid, reliable water heater that does what we need it to do.”
But not every consumer has the same happy tale to tell:
“Purchased an 80-gallon solar water heater in 2008, and in 2012 it had to be replaced because it was leaking rusty water. Now, in 2015, it has the same problem - leaking a large amount of water again. The cost of removing and replacing it, even though the tank is under warranty, is not saving me any money by having solar.”
“Had a Lochinvar installed in my house August 2016. In August 2018 (2 years and 1 day later) it began leaking during a showing of my house, which was for sale. While the cost of the tank was covered under the warranty, it still cost nearly $1,000 in parts and labor to install the new one. When a heater fails that soon after installation, everything should be covered. There is no excuse for failure after 2 years. My last water heater (not a Lochinvar) lasted over 10. Don't waste your money.”
“Had this water heater installed in 2-2014, it worked fine until 2-2015. The pilot light will not stay lit. The manufacturer replaced the unit on 3-6-2015; however, I had to pay the people to install it and make a home call, $125.00. The new unit worked until 3-16-2015; had to light the pilot, the same procedure May 3, 2015. It lit long enough to light the burner, which worked for about 15 minutes. Then the pilot would not light again. I then called the company that installed the replacement. Waiting for them to get back to me, now I have no hot water. If you don't want an armload of problems, don't buy this product.”
“I just want say I am a master plumber of 35 years and used to work in N.Dallas area and we sold and installed and very rare to have to repair a lochinvar Water heater they are made like an American product should be as like a Chicago faucet heavy duty I am proud of my trade and the American products we sell. Thanks”
