All Things HVAC is written by people who have spent their working lives inside other people's mechanical rooms.

Who writes this

We are husband and wife HVAC contractors who started in 1988. We formed this web site so consumers could have an educational place to go for good, solid information. We are not trying to sell you anything. We just want to pass on years of research, trial and error, and our street knowledge. Hopefully you will find it useful, helpful and enjoyable. Maybe we can even make you smile.

That was written when the site began and it still describes the job. Nearly four decades of service calls is the reason this site can tell you which noises matter, which upsells to decline, and which repairs are worth doing on equipment that is already old.

What we don't do

We don't install equipment, we don't quote jobs, and we don't sell your details to a contractor network. There is no lead form on this site and there never will be. That independence is the whole point: it means we can name the brands whose warranties are painful to claim against, and tell you when a service you have been quoted for is not worth buying.

How we source things

Where an article makes a claim that rests on a standard, a federal programme or a code, we link the document itself rather than someone's summary of it. In practice that means ENERGY STAR product pages, the EPA on refrigerants and indoor air quality, ACCA for load calculation and installation quality, the AHRI directory for certified performance ratings, NFPA for fuel gas and oil-burning codes, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics for anything about pay and employment in the trade.

Every outbound reference on this site was checked and confirmed to resolve. Where a source we previously cited had gone dead or could not be verified, the citation was removed rather than left pointing at nothing.

When things change

Two things in this industry changed recently enough to invalidate a lot of older writing, including some of ours. Efficiency ratings moved from SEER to SEER2 in January 2023, and the refrigerant in new residential systems moved away from R-410A under the AIM Act's phasedown. Rather than quietly editing old numbers, articles that quote the older measure carry a visible note explaining what changed and what to check instead. You will see those notes in the relevant guides.

Everything here is general guidance. It is not a substitute for someone competent putting gauges on your specific equipment, and it cannot account for your local code. Gas, high voltage and sealed refrigerant circuits genuinely do hurt people. Where an article tells you to stop and call somebody, that is the advice, not a hedge.
